Bridge

The bridge is a prosthesis that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is a fixed partial prosthesis that rests on the teeth located on either side of the missing tooth. These are called “piers” and will have to be modified to accommodate the structure of the bridge and keep it in place. If these abutment teeth are intact, we will opt for an implant-supported prosthesis instead to avoid reducing the size of healthy teeth.

Making a fixed bridge

The dental bridge consists of joining two abutment teeth using a “bridge” tooth. It is therefore an artificial tooth fixed between two crowns.

During an initial visit, the supporting teeth are ground so that they can receive the crowns. Then, a 3D scan of the teeth is taken and sent to the laboratory to design the custom-made bridge, in one piece. Finally, a temporary bridge is installed to protect your teeth while your dentures are being made.

The permanent bridge will be cemented in the mouth during a second visit.

The bridge is a permanent restoration with multiple advantages:

  • Prevents migration of adjacent teeth to the vacant space
  • Improves aesthetics by filling voids
  • Improves chewing function and aids digestion
  • Corrects slurred speech caused by missing teeth
  • Prevents wear and tear on natural teeth

A bridge has an average lifespan of 10 years as long as it is maintained with care. We will show you the proper oral hygiene techniques so that your new teeth stay beautiful for a long time.
