Peridontics

Gum and bone disease is the main dental condition in adults after cavities. This type of problem is detected during the dental exam. A specific test is performed to establish whether or not there are abnormalities in the gum and underlying bone. If the test is positive, a complete periodontal examination will be advised, following which treatments will be offered to stabilize the situation.

In periodontics, prevention takes precedence. However, the minute the diagnosis is made, it aims to stabilize the disease and restore the tooth’s support structures.

Bacterial plaque is responsible for gum inflammation, but several factors can promote the development of periodontitis:

  • Inadequate dental hygiene
  • Health conditions (diabetes, leukemia)
  • Smoking
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Heredity

The treatment of periodontal disease is essential since the consequences of an untreated condition are devastating to the point of causing the loss of one or more teeth.

Knowing what the risk factors are, it is possible to turn the tide before it is too late when the diagnosis is early. It is important to remember that gingivitis can be cured, but a periodontal disease can only be stabilized to prevent a significant deterioration in oral health.
