Orthodontics
Our dental surgeons at Centre dentaire Milan Brossard have the skills to allow everyone to display an impeccable smile and bite. Thanks to preventive orthodontics, traditional or invisible, we can help our patients correct defects in the positioning of bones, jaws and teeth, regardless of their age.
The orthodontic procedure
An orthodontic procedure is undertaken to correct the appearance and function of the structures of the mouth. A multitude of switchgear is available in both fixed and removable versions. Their ultimate function remains the same: to exert a very slight force on the teeth in order to bring them to the optimal position and improve the bite.
Factors contributing to dental malocclusion:
- Missing or supernumerary teeth
- Misaligned teeth
- Overlapping teeth
- Advanced teeth
Certain habits such as finger sucking or mouth breathing can influence jaw development.
Possible consequences of malocclusion:
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Premature tooth wear
- Muscle tension and orofacial pain
- Development of oral diseases due to difficult hygiene (cavities, gum disease)
Types of treatments
The interceptive procedure
Phase I treatment is for children who are preschoolers or entering elementary school. It is performed on a growing dentition, primary or mixed, in order to prevent a situation that could damage the teeth, bones, jaws and even their development.
The following conditions often explain the use of an interceptive procedure:
- Asymmetry of the jaws (one wide, the other narrow)
- Severe malposition
- Lack of space or overlap
- Trauma to the face
- Open bite between the upper and lower teeth when the jaws are closed
- Chronic habits that cause displacement or deformity of the mouth (thumb sucking)
The interception aims to interrupt or modify the evolution or the planned progression and promotes the proper dentofacial development of the child. Therefore, it is not a guarantee that a future orthodontic procedure will not be necessary. However, it certainly reduces the scale, duration and costs of the project.
The invisible procedure
Invisible orthodontics with Invisalign technology allows for the straightening and alignment of teeth using a series of clear, removable corrective aligners. Each aligner is worn for two weeks before moving on to the next, which will prompt a new stage of displacement. Custom-made, they are made from a medical-grade polymer and have no aftertaste.
Benefits of Invisalign Invisible Orthodontics
- Discreet
- Comfortable and removable
- No dietary restrictions
- Dental hygiene made easier or even unchanged
- Shortened treatment versus a traditional procedure
- Require fewer follow-up visits
- Aimed at adults, teenagers and even children!
However, this approach requires unfailing diligence to ensure that the treatment succeeds in a timely manner and that it produces the desired result. Typically, the duration varies between 9 and 18 months, while corrective aligners should keep about 22 hours in the mouth per day.
Traditional procedures
Traditional braces have evolved a lot in recent years. Smaller in size, the cases are more discreet. Similarly, they can be self-ligating, without elastomeric fasteners, or made of ceramic that blends in with the natural dentition. For the more eccentric, dental arches and colored elastics can also be used.
Regardless of the treatment chosen, it is almost inevitable that you will have to wear a retainer at the end of the procedure. The purpose of the latter is to maintain the new harmony of the teeth and prevent them from returning to their original position.
