Dental surgery
Dental surgery is primarily concerned with the care of the structures of the mouth using specialized and proven instrumentation. The tools used vary depending on the procedure to be performed and generally, local anesthesia is required. The dental surgeon is authorized to perform minor dental surgeries such as extractions, gingival and bone grafts, crown lengthening and implant placement.
Among the most frequently performed surgeries are the extraction of wisdom teeth and the insertion of implants.
Tooth extractions
Such an act is often feared. However, since the primary objective of dentistry is to allow everyone to keep their natural teeth for as long as possible, extraction is only performed out of necessity, such as:
- A fractured tooth
- Bone loss
- A tooth heavily damaged by cavities
- A tooth that has remained impacted in the jawbone
- A supernumerary tooth
Wisdom teeth are not automatically removed
It is wrong to believe that a wisdom tooth must necessarily be removed. As long as the latter does not cause any pain and does not interfere with the alignment of the teeth already present or oral health, no action will be taken beyond observation.
The third molar will be extracted when there is insufficient space on the dental arch, when its axis of eruption is abnormal, or if it is partially or completely embedded in the jawbone. This ultimate condition can lead to infections, inflammation of the gums or the development of cysts or benign tumors.
Removal of the wisdom tooth
As long as the tooth to be removed does not present any abnormality, the simple extraction will take place. This technique consists, under local anesthesia, of moving the tooth and then removing it. The difficult-to-access tooth will be avulsed by surgical extraction.
Dental implant
The dental implant consists of a small biocompatible titanium screw a few millimeters long. Attached to the jawbone, the latter is designed to replace a natural root, and consequently, prevent the loss of bone volume where a tooth is missing. It also prevents the movement of adjacent teeth to the space left free.
Thanks to the phenomenon of osseointegration, the implant fuses to the bone and becomes as strong as a natural root. It is thus used as an anchor to hold an artificial tooth in place. It can be a prosthetic crown, a bridge, or a fixed or removable partial or complete prosthesis.
Implantology Procedure: The Steps
- Complete dental examination
- X-ray, bone scan, photo taking
- 3D Modeling
- Insertion of the implant(s) into the jawbone, under local anesthesia
- Healing period and replacement teeth
- Appetizer (adjustment, re-examination)
- Follow-up visit
The age of is not a criterion for receiving a dental implant. However, the patient must meet 3 conditions:
- Enjoying excellent overall health
- Have an adequate and fairly massive bone structure
- Have healthy and adequate gums
When a case has contraindications, our professionals suggest other solutions such as bone grafting or a removable dental prosthesis without implants (dentures or bridges).
